Strengthen Your Farm’s Resilience: Drought Preparedness Grants in QLD and VIC

Drought is an ever-present challenge for Australian farmers, but with the right support, you can prepare your farm to better manage the impacts of dry conditions. Farmers in both Queensland and Victoria have access to specific grant programs designed to provide financial assistance for critical infrastructure upgrades that improve drought preparedness.

Queensland: Drought Preparedness Grants

In Queensland, the Drought Preparedness Grants provide primary producers up to $50,000 in co-contribution funding—covering 25% of the cost—for permanent infrastructure upgrades to enhance their property’s resilience to drought conditions. This funding is available over a five-year period, based on eligible expenditures of up to $200,000.

The program is administered by QRIDA (Queensland Rural and Industry Development Authority) and supports farmers who have developed a Farm Business Resilience Plan.

What can the grant cover?

The grants support up to 25% of the cost of eligible activities, including:

  • Water infrastructure: new dams, bores, tanks, troughs, pipes, and pumps
  • Feed and storage systems: silos, feed mixing equipment, and storage sheds for grain, fodder, molasses, and supplements
  • Freight components: for the purchase and installation of equipment or infrastructure
  • Consumables: such as fuel for farm machinery used in drought-preparedness projects
  • Contractor costs: for building or installing infrastructure

Who is eligible?

To apply, you must:

  1. Be a primary producer meeting QRIDA’s definition.
  2. Present a Farm Business Resilience Plan outlining your drought-preparedness activities. https://www.business.qld.gov.au/industries/farms-fishing-forestry/agriculture/disaster/drought/assistance/business-resilience-plan
  3. Demonstrate the ability to cover the remaining costs of the project.
  4. Ensure the project meets all regulatory requirements and has not commenced before grant approval.

Why apply?

These grants offer a practical way to improve your farm’s drought preparedness, reduce operational costs, and enhance long-term sustainability. With funds limited, it’s important to apply sooner rather than later to secure your share of the support.

For more information, including application details, visit the QRIDA website > https://www.qrida.qld.gov.au/program/drought-preparedness-grants

Victoria: On-Farm Drought Infrastructure Grants Program

Farmers in southwest Victoria can access funding as part of the Victorian Government’s $13.53 million Drought Support Package, announced in September 2024. This initiative includes $12.1 million dedicated to helping farmers prepare for ongoing drought and dry seasonal conditions.

The On-Farm Drought Infrastructure Grants Program offers up to $5,000 in matched funding to support critical on-farm improvements that build resilience and improve the long-term viability of farm businesses.

What can the grant cover?

The grants can be used for a variety of upgrades, including:

•             Water infrastructure upgrades: pipes, tanks, and troughs

•             Stock containment areas: to manage feed distribution and reduce overgrazing

•             Grain and fodder storage: to safeguard feed during dry periods

•             Drought management tools: such as soil moisture monitors and weather stations

A full list of eligible activities is available in the program guidelines.

Who is eligible?

The grants are open to farmers in southwest Victoria in the following Local Government Areas (LGAs):

•             Ararat

•             City of Greater Geelong

•             Colac Otway

•             Corangamite

•             Glenelg

•             Golden Plains

•             Moyne

•             Pyrenees

•             Southern Grampians

•             Surf Coast

•             Warrnambool

•             Southern West Wimmera (postcodes 3312, 3317, 3318, 3319)

To qualify, farmers must provide a dollar-for-dollar co-contribution for the funding.

Why apply?

These grants offer a practical way to improve your farm’s drought preparedness, reduce operational costs, and enhance long-term sustainability. With funds limited, it’s important to apply sooner rather than later to secure your share of the support.

For more information, including application details, visit the Victorian Government’s drought support page > https://agriculture.vic.gov.au/farm-management/prepare/dry-seasons-and-drought-support/on-farm-drought-infrastructure-grants

Why These Grants Matter

Both programs reflect a broader commitment to helping farmers build drought resilience, reduce risks, and improve their ability to operate in challenging conditions. Whether you’re in Victoria or Queensland, these grants provide an opportunity to make lasting improvements to your farm while receiving meaningful financial support.

By investing in infrastructure like water storage, feed systems, and drought-monitoring tools, you can prepare your farm for future challenges and ensure its long-term viability. Don’t wait to get started—grants are limited, and preparation is key.

Check your eligibility, develop your plans, and submit your application to take the next step towards a more resilient future.
